Sign this petition and tell the USDA to recognize zoos as inherently cruel to animals, ban them in the United States, and rehome their animals in safe sanctuaries. While people may have once thought that these manmade facilites provided animals with the space and capacity for care they need to flourish, there is now little doubt that keeping wild animals captive is a threat to their health and wellbeing.

Many zoos are structured as for-profit corporations, and do not support the conservation of species [1], let alone give them the room and climate suited to their needs.

The UK's Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), one of the world's most respected and venerated animal advocacy organizations, has declared that elephants in zoos are categorically less healthy than their cousins in the wild, as well they suffer from substantially greater amounts of stress, and have a much shorter life expectancy [2].

The theory that zoos are built to provide animals with a better life than they would have in the wild is patently false. Animals deemed "surplus" are often killed to make room for those who bring in more money for the business, according to a study concluded by the Captive Animal Protection Society [3]. Throughout the world, selective culling results in hundreds of thousands of dead zoo animals a year.

Proponents of zoos claim they provide an educational benefit to the public, but modern technological advances have made those benefits obsolete [4]. Live footage of wild animals can be streamed using small cameras mounted in their natural habitat. And researchers can achieve just as accurate results from the same methods.

There is no denying that zoos exist to make money, not for educational purposes, and breeding animals in captivity is how they meet that end [5], but the lie has been preserved for long enough. The animals are suffering, and it's time the United States Department of Agriculture put an end to the cruelty.

Dear United States Department of Agriculture,

There is no shortage of proof that zoos exist to make money, rather than education purposes, and breeding animals in captivity is how they meet that end, but the lie has been preserved for long enough. The animals are suffering, and it's time you recognize zoos as inherently cruel.

I implore you to ban keeping wild animals as entertainment for humans, and rehome those who are currently held in captivity in compassionate sanctuaries here in the United States.

Zoos provide no educational benefit to the public that modern technology cannot outperform in every way, while maintaining humane standards. Live footage of wild animals can be streamed using small cameras mounted in their natural habitat. And researchers can achieve just as accurate results from the same methods.

We have gone on long enough pretending that zoos are healthy places for animals to be kept. They merely contribute to the continual suffering, shorter lifespan, and eventual death of those animals.

Ban the operation of zoos in the United States today, and free the animals from life in a cruel prison.

Sincerely,

Petition Signatures
