Ping Khelda (While Swinging) was honored by the Nepal Society for Children's Literature (NESCHIL) as the Best Children's Book for the age 4 to 8 category. The publication and distribution of this picture book was made possible by The Literacy Site and GreaterGood.org donations to Room to Read.
Written in short, simple verses, Ping Khelda tells the story of a girl who falls from a swing and how her family members took care of her. At the end, the little girl climbs back on the swing, ready to play again, although more carefully this time.
By creating colorful books like Ping Khelda about situations familiar to their readers, Room to Read's Local Language Publishing Program increases the quantity and diversity of children's literature available in the countries where they work. These books are designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning.
Room to Read began in 1998 (their original name was Books for Nepal) and has since grown to become an international organization, building 10,000 libraries stocked with more than 7 million titles to encourage children to read.
