ZNF703 drives Luminal B breast cancer, reports researchers

Scientists have identified a gene that may be a driver of Luminal B breast cancer, a very rare but serious form of breast cancer, according to the BBC.

"Scientists first discovered this region of DNA may be harbouring genes linked to the development of breast cancer 20 years ago. But it's only with the technology we have today that we've been able to narrow down the search sufficiently to pinpoint the gene responsible," Professor Carlos Caldas, the leading resesarch scientist, told the news source.

ZNF703 is the first breast cancer oncogene of its type to be found in five years, according to Dr. Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research U.K.

The study was conducted at Cancer Research U.K.'s Cambridge Research Institute and the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Canada. According to the research abstract, the ZNF703 gene had an effect on TGF-beta, a tumor growth factor.

The study, published in EMBO Molecular Medicine February 2011, is titled "ZNF703 is a common Luminal B breast cancer oncogene that differentially regulates luminal and basal progenitors in human mammary epithelium."
