UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center receives $400,000 donation

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama has made the largest single donation to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) ever with their generous gift of $400,000, according to UAB.edu.

"Our friends at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama have enabled our breast cancer research program to become one of the most vigorous and well-regarded programs in the nation. Their dedication is saving lives every day, and we are grateful for their steadfast partnership in the fight against cancer," Edward Partridge, director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, told the news source.

The foundation raised the money from the sale of breast cancer license plates emblazoned with the pink ribbon logo and the phrase, "funding research in Alabama." Along with fundraising dinners, pink t-shirt sales and other events, the foundation has provided nearly $3 million to UAB in 2010.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama has set their sights on a goal of $500,000 for 2011, which would be the largest sum of money ever raised for the organization.

According to BreastCancer.org, excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women.
