Tennis great Martina Navratilova undergoing breast cancer treatments

Women's tennis legend Martina Navratilova publicly announced on Wednesday that she is being treated for breast cancer after being diagnosed in January.

Breaking the news on Good Morning America, Navratilova said that a January mammogram had detected ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer that is rarely life-threatening, but carries an increased risk of invasive cancer later on, USA Today reports.

In March, the tennis star underwent a surgical procedure to remove cancerous tissue, and will pursue 4 to 6 weeks of radiation therapy beginning in May. The Prague-born American athlete said she hopes to undergo treatment in Paris so that she can continue working as a commentator for the Tennis Channel during the French Open.

The 53-year-old Navratilova told the news source that she partly blames herself for not being more proactive with mammogram screenings - letting four years pass between examinations.

"I let it slip by, I was a bad girl," she commented, adding "The sooner you catch it, the better."

Currently, the American Cancer Society recommends that women over the age 40 have a mammogram each year.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19709156-ADNFCR
