Overweight women face increased cancer risk

Recent data released by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has found that almost 44% of women in the UK have a waist size that is larger than recommended. The WCRF warns that a large waistline is especially harmful to a woman's health and could lead to greater risks of bowel, pancreas and breast cancer, according to the BBC.

Dr. Rachel Thompson, the deputy head of science for the WCRF, has stressed that the overweight trend among women is a main health concern in the UK and is one of the largest preventable health problems they have in their country.

"Over the last few years the evidence has become increasingly strong that excess body fat, and particularly fat carried around the middle, is a cancer risk factor," Thompson told the news source.

Thompson added that breast cancer and endometrial cancers account for nearly one third of newly diagnosed cancers in women. Obesity has become a widespread health problem in England and doctors are taking the pre-emptive steps to educate the public about risk of further complications.

According the the American Cancer Society, women should undergo yearly mammograms when they reach age 40.
