Executive director for Susan G Komen for the Cure has breast cancer

Life is often full of strange surprises, and if there's one person who knows this, it's Cheryl Shaw. The local executive director for the Puget Sound chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was just diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, according to NWCN.com.

Shaw has no family history of cancer, yet has always made sure to schedule a yearly mammogram. It was after her most recent one that her diagnosis was made.

"Had I not had my annual mammogram, it would not have been detected this early, so the key is early detection and the only way they would have discovered this cancer is through the mammogram," she told the news outlet.

Although the businesswoman has gone from being an advocate for awareness of the disease to a statistic, she has remained courageously upbeat, and is preparing to undergo surgery this week.

The American Cancer Society reports that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lives.

"I'm one of the eight now," Shaw told the news source.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19933996-ADNFCR
