Delta employees raise $1 million for breast cancer awareness

The travel industry has experienced a bumpy ride since the recession began, but employees of Delta Air Lines have still managed to raise over $1 million toward breast cancer awareness. That's more than double what the company has raised in the past.

The funds that the company generated will all be given to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

So, how did they do it? Delta sold pink lemonade to customers on all of their flights during October, which was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That's right - a lemonade stand in the sky raised a million dollars!

Delta credits its merger with Northwest Airlines with the success of the campaign. The company has been working to support the cause since 2005.

"Together, our employees and customers continue to show their profound and unwavering commitment to helping raise both awareness and funds toward the fight against breast cancer which will, one day, lead to a cure," said Joanne Smith, Delta's senior vice president of in-flight services.

Travelers who are flying with Delta can also purchase pink products like luggage tags, tumblers, aprons and pens on their website, the proceeds from which go to the BCRF, the news source reports.
