Breast cancer gene may also be linked to heart disease

A new study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that BRCA1, a mutated gene that is commonly found in breast cancer patients, may also be a link to heart disease, according to the Montreal Gazette.

"Women who have these mutations may not only be at risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, but they may also be at a previously unrecognized risk of developing heart disease," Dr. Subodh Verma, a cardiac surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and Canada Research Chair in Atherosclerosis, told the news source.

This news shows that both heart disease and breast cancer, two of the leading causes of mortality among women, may come from the same gene mutation. The researchers are now looking into a specific treatment method to help those with mutation.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Not only is it the second most common form of cancer among women behind skin cancer, but it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
